I have learned so much from you guys. I was ecstatic to leave the wet dark room. I embraced digital early on and never looked back. Chemicals, dust, yech! When we travel I am always saying to my husband, “well,Moose says…”. Would love to be a winner!

  2. Tony White says:

Looking forward to seeing the Jay in Paris, though I do wonder if you will have problems filming it… I thought the French had something against photographing people in the street without permission….

  3. Tim Erskine says:

another great show. Would love to win the onOne software.

  8. Hey Matt, you spoke about wishing you could open up a jpeg from Photoshop back into camera raw without having to save the file first. Well Calvin Hollywood asked Russell Brown to create a script to do just that. It will open a jpeg or tiff from photoshop into camera raw without having to leave. It’s great! I use it all the time. I also saw that it works with CS6 as well. Here is the link:

    Great as always
    On one software please

  10. Shaun white says:

Great show yo all, it was very cool to see the Moose on the show.

  11. William Chinn says:

    Frank’s DVD please

I started darkroom work in B&W. Had to have color so the Beseler enlarger was in the corner. It took 2-4 hours to generate a print (Bless the chemical temperatures). This, along with the Nikon F, F2, and Nikkormat FTN, are gathering dust but are still with me. Went to digital point & shoots using PS 6 and LR 1 beta. Bought Kelby books and training media. Packed them away when they were outdated. The next to go are PS Channels, Kelby’s 7-point system, and 7-Point System for Camera Raw DVD. Took 6 Kelby seminars in Los Angeles. Own a D90 that I’m still learning to use quickly. Yes, we are computer hardware / software literate. Yes, I am a Nerd in the true sense. Yes, all of this to take a picture to show on my computer and Android tablet (had to get that in). All of this to take pictures 24 hours a day, not just when the sun is on a horizon. All of the above allows me to visualize the why and desired end product and not just the how and “that’s a nice pic”. Have LR4, and PS CS6 is on order. Yes, I write cursive to myself.

Look forward to the Travel media and Maisel vs Parisians. How about McNally on photojournalism and telling a story?

  12. Shawn Highfill says:

Great show. My free trial of Lr4 just ran out. First time I have ever used lightroom. Matt come to Quincy, Wa a town of 6000. I am sure at least 3 people here have cameras. I guess Seattle would be a ok.

    Floof and run

  13. Nice show. This discussion on the “new X old” is interesting.

Evolution is the key, as Moose mentioned.

The problem is that people don’t want to change. They like to stay in their comfort zone and the have the feeling they hold some special skill.

I disagree on the cursive thing Scott likes to point out. It’s still needed, even if only to take notes on an iPad using a Bamboo Stylus :-)

  14. Mike Arnott says:

Great show guys. Embrace the future!!!

  15. james says:

    great show guys! :)

  16. Alex says:

In this episode of The Grid, i think that Scott and them got something fundamentally wrong. That is saying that cursive writing is dead. No it is not, where i live in Canada, i pass in 85 percent of my work in hand writing. Not every school has enough money to provide computers to all their students.

  17. Lee Zeitelhack says:

Scott, Matt & Moose, I am a relative babe-in-the woods with Photoshop, having just purchased CS5 (great timing) and shot 35mm and medium format film as a casual hobby for more than 30 years. I’m just now beginning to get “serious” as a photographer, and am loving Kelby Training, Kelby TV, NAPP, etc. I am taking some workshops to get new perspectives and both artistic and technical knowledge and am having a great time. My film cameras are all on the shelf and will stay there. I understand why some people resist the obvoius truth about what you are saying about clinging to their root experiences. Their time with film cameras and in wet darkrooms was not wasted, but if they are still doing that stuff, they are like the guy from the turn of the 20th Century who insisted on using his buckboard, team of horses and buggy whip. He still got where he wanted to go, but the ride was slow, bumpy and full of smells that horses emit. While I am learning to drive the new software, I will be a little tentative and slow. I am making mistakes, but learning by them. I am somewhat daunted by the complexity of it all, but am having an amazing amount of fun. Thanks for being brutally honest and keeping me moving in the right direction, however tentatively I am moving.

  18. peace gaddis says:

its great to have a Moose in the house.

  19. Gary Sydnor says:

    onOne software

  20. Lewis Johnston says:

“I agree with everything that Scott said”……..
Isn’t that what you told us to say?
Hope to see Matt’s LR4 Training in Washington, DC someday.
    Frank’s DVD would be awesome.

  21. Andy says:

Good and interesting topic that computer software changes at a fast pace.

  22. Chuck Sider says:

Please add Las Vegas, Nevada to your seminar tours . . . PLEASE.

  23. Chuck Riley says:

    I’d love a copy of Frank’s DVD

  24. Ed Carlos says:

    Great show!!

  25. Michael says:

What I have learned in the darkroom that applies to current photography is — the importance of getting in as correct as possible in the camera.

Fixing exposure, head swapping, removing stuff, and all those little things that now get “fixed in post” are so easy to do most people never have incentive to learn. I think Jay Maisel said something about being visually lazy…..

  26. Patryk Koniuszewski says:

Hey, that’s the things – people are scared to learn new things and in general they don’t like changes. But if you not going forward – you walking back.
Guys – why you are not supporting more Android?

  27. Len Provenzano says:

Hi Guys, Another fine show. I rermember when I first bought PhotoShop thinking that because of my years of expierience in photography I would have a head start. I was wrong.
    That OnOne package looks good.
    Keep it up.

  28. Holly says:

I have to be careful when I’m listening to these discussions. I am a designer, who happens to use photography in my day to day work. I still use a lot of curves, channels etc because on occasion, unfortunately, have to composite, recolor images that were taken before my time and I can’t get it right in the camera first. I essentially have to make chicken salad out of well…you know… :) Its just the nature of production work sometimes.

So for “photographers” I can see how certain aspects of photoshop are useless. But there’s still a whole world of Photoshop users out there that aren’t photographers.

I can’t tell you how excited I am about the ACR updates though. I love ACR and it will be great to finally use it the way it always should have been used!

Love the show! Youz guyz crack me up! See ya next week!

  29. Gene Kimball says:

I also worked in the dark room for years. I did enjoy it. The process we used wasted paper and chemicals to get test prints. The test prints had to be viewed outside of the darkroom, corrected and then print another test print. If you were skilled, you could make fewer test prints and hopefully, you did not have to do a lot of dodging or burning in. Once you have the exposure down [and filtration], you made each print by dodging or burning in where needed. This was very time consuming and all adjustments were made manually.

Here comes digital photography and Photoshop as well as third party filters. What may have taken you quite some time previously now takes minutes or seconds and there is no need to manually manipulate each print. Plus, you have a lot more control than you ever had in the darkroom. Even calibration in the darkroom days could take considerable time if the chemicals were deemed unacceptable. Densitometry took considerably more time than monitor/printer calibration

I understand the reluctance to change as people, in general, do not like change to any great degree. Photographers who use the darkroom are comfortable with that process and do not wish to learn another system even though it is considered better than the old one. Digital photography is here to stay – until something better comes along. Photoshop is merely a tool, a great one, but still a tool. Personally, I like PS and LR. They are much easier and faster to use than the old system.

  30. Tony Rouzer says:

I follow the Photoshop Guys. Haven’t steered me wrong. Put me on the path to visiual success.

  31. Phil Beavis says:

    Hi there,
Great show again guys, always thought provoking and somewhat controversial. Love it !
Would love to win the OnOne software if possible
    Thanks,
    Phil.
