Great show as always. Very interesting to hear your commentary on some of the longer focal length lenses.
Great show!
show idea: How to create photobook tricks and tips.
Great show guys! Is that a rubber hood on Matts 70-200? where did he get it???
a Mamiya rb67 127-250 hood
great show
keep them coming
you guys need to write a book to cover this and the last dtown
also you can add what lens work well with what flash
That’s for doing another show on lenses. Always great to see the different types and what they are best suited for. I wonder if you could talk about tilt-shift lenses on a future show?
Thanks!
Thanks for all the great information.
Brilliant as always!
Great info!
Awesome show guys!!!! Please do a show about concert and sports photography!!! THANKS!
Enjoyed both shows on lenses
Very Interesting!
Love the details about all the lenses! Super helpful!
Love the show, as always!
Great second half! Love to see more on other gear.
Thanks guys! My vacation lens (on my D3s) is the 28-300. Don’t have a 14-xx, so my other lens is 24-70 f/2.8; in case I’m inside someplace that doesn’t allow flash…
Matt,
Check your prices on the Nikon 50 f1.4 & f1.8.
There’s not that much difference in prices.
Perhaps you were thinking of the 85mm when you mentioned the $1k difference.
Great show!! Speaking of ThinkTank, how about a show on your bags for different situations and what you actually have in them from the body down to lens cleaning items.
Nice show.
I’m just getting back to film, would love a copy of the book.
great show..
Thank You
Mike Moffo
Hey guys thanks for the show! I read it mentioned in an earlier post, I’d love to hear about tilt lenses also. Another thing I would like to see on the show is computers, more in relation to which is better RAM or Graphic Card processing for working with photoshop, lightroom, aperture. Forums help only so much. My mac pro crashed on me and I was thinking of getting a iMac to replace it. Now a quad core is going to handle stuff better than my old (I think G5? No it was def an intel chip). I just want a machine that will process quick so I can get back out and shoot. Interested in your opinion, thanks so much for doing all these show!
Thanks guys, film has just been resting.
Great interesting show
Great show. You missed one type of situation, concerts or similar events. Would have loved to get your recommendations.
Great show and now I have more lens to dream about getting or renting.
Great show! Glad I don’t shoot sports
Good discussion on tele length. More discussion on macro would be really nice!
What is the crop effect of putting an FX lens on a DX body?
Thanks.
nice show, it’s fun to dream.
Great show, thanks for the information. I think I’ll rent the next lens before purchasing.
Good Show. This helps a lot.
Thanks for the great show!
great information
Thanks
Yeah, lenses, ho hum, yawn.
Great show again. A couple of other additional points regarding the more expensive long lenses when compared to the less expensive equivalent focal lengths:
1. The auto-focusing and VR is noticeably faster and responsive than the lower priced lenses. That is an important point when trying to hone in on fast moving action – sports or birds in flight.
2. To save some money, you can spend the $5k on say the 300mm 2.8 and then use a $500 2x teleconverter to get you a 600mm f5.6 equivalent that is still reasonably sharp and will autofocus. It is not a bad compromise.
Great show! As always!!
Is there any disadvantage to a 70-200 with a 2x converter versus a 200-400? The cost certainly is much more appealing.
Steven, your AF will be slower. And of course in 70-200 + TC you loose 2 stops of light
Thanks for the overview of lenses. Really like the suggestion to rent.
nice tips guys… all the best…
Thanks again, see you next week.
Thanks guys.
very interesting show! thanks!
Hy guys!
To travel I use to carry a Tamron 18-270… and I’m thinking seriously in buying a fish eye or an extreme Tokina 11-16 f/2.8. Those two must complement really really well…
But… what about flashes? Do you usually carry on any kind of flash when you travel, I mean, a small flash like Canon’s 270EXII or similar?
Thanks in advance
nice episode!!
Great show. But the Episode-109 video on youtube ends very abruptly in the middle of a sentence.
Loved hearIng what your favorite lenses are and for which application you use them! Although it did make me feel poor! ; )
RC, pretty pleeeeease I need your help and your book. I need a website, and am completely ignorant about how to go about it.
Many thanks, and we’ll see you next week!
Great show.keep the info coming. how to carry your stuff. THANKS 4 L@@KING.
Great show!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great show again. How about a quick show on using the intervalometer on our Nikon’s….but especially on how to transfer the images to make it work after shooting…and which program to use. Thanks
Great show. Larry had a Cheap Shot tip of using an inexpensive wrist band to prevent lens creep and it works great – and it”s cheap!
Love to see more shows on how you use equipment on travel shoots and general walkarounds.
Great show as usual.
Great show as usual.
Great tips. Thanks for the show.
Thanks guys for another good show
Great show
Great show loved the info on the lens
Thanks again
Love learning about lenses.
Darn, I was hoping you were going to give away the 600VR.
Very informative show. How about a show featuring the new mirror less cameras and lenses. I’m planning to get one and would love to get your take on the choices.
How about giving away Scott’s 400 prime.
Good show.
Thanx for the comparisons (rather than saying “I love this lens!!!!”)
WAITING FOR AN EPISODE ABOUT SHOOTING MOVIE ON DSLR!!!
Thanks!
Great Show, not sure I can win the prizes in Spain, but that would be nice to know if I can. Switching is going better in the show and this is great information, what about doing a bit on the ISO, F-stop and speed triangle. Thanks .
Good show!
Great show.
Thanks.
great show
Really enjoyed your lenses specials, thanks guys!!!
Though I´ve got used to RC´s teaching techniques it´s always refreshing to have Matt around. I´ve already read your Layers book many times and mede good use of it. Thank you folks, as always great show…
Great as always. And very informative, as I know for sure what I’m NOT buying now!! Thanks.
Awesome Guys. Keep it up.
Great show- Good information.
Thanks
guys, I LOVE YOUR SHOW!!! En verdad, keep rocking!!
Thanks guys for a great show – like it!
awesome – thanks!
Good show. 50 f/1.8 is still best buy for the money
Great show…
Has the iPad changed the way you work? Are there new opportunities with the New iPad?
Nice arsenal to play with… Anyway, it would be nice if you could increase the sound volume when recording the show. It’s a bit low, I think. Thanks.
Informative show guys. I have the 14-24, 24-70, and 70-200 2.8. I bought my wife the 28-300 for her D7000 and I find myself borrowing her lens alot because of the range…….I think this show will help alot of people out there. As always great show….
Very informative. Thanks.
Good show, as always.
Great show! When I need a little extra reach, I use my 70-200 2.8 on my D200 body. That gets me in tighter at 300mm.
good show guys, good topic
Great show!
Great show! How about an episode on flashes like the new Canon and Nikon flagships?
Nice wrap up on lenses.
Super show!!! I would like to see a show on printers in the future.
Great show!
Awesome and very timely information on lenses. Thanks!
Great job guys! You 2 nailed it again.
Great show and great topic.
I was thining about getting an 18-200 and now I am feel good about it. That combined with my 1.5 50 and I am good to go just about anywhere.
Great show
Gotta love fast glass
Great show. I like your what’s on your T-Shirt “Slacker”.
Good show, it would be good to cover, de DX options as well.
Lensprotogo.com is a great resource. Rented one of the 600mm lenses one time for a week–they are great!!
OK, I keep waiting for the show where you give away the 400 f2.8 at the end — I mean, you have to sweeten the deal every now and then, right? OK, I’d settle for RC’s book — I still don’t have that one and I would really like to get started with
Wordpress. Thanks for everything you guys do!
now that you tell us about your everyday carry lens… how about your everyday carry filter for your lens…
great show
Thanks for doing a new episode on lenses, always so much fun to watch!!
another helpful show, thanks!
Great show.
Loved the show, it’s great to hear someone else’s take on lenses. Love using LensProtogo.com – they are my go-to for trying out lenses – even cameras and they are adding equipment all the time.
Hey guys, another great show!
Maybe you could do a show about how some of the Nikon cameras compare at higher iOS settings?
I have an older D70 and find myself now doing a lot of band and low light photography and am looking to upgrade but really have a hard time finding real world info on how the various models perform at higher iso’s. Such as the D7000 vs D700 vs D3 or whatever models you decided.
Just figuring out how to compare the avail info so I make the right investment would be a great help.
Not necessarily asking for a recommendation to buy camera x as much as here’s how the differences matter in the REAL world.
Anyway, just am idea.
Wow lenses
great show
thanks
excellent as always…
Great show. I want the 200-400 or any thing on the desk!!!!
Will have to notify my nephew to watch these two episodes. He is a tweener, and just starting out. This should really help.
Thanks for the lens episode. Macro photography would be nice.
Another great show guys, keep up the good work.
Cheers
Phil.
another helpful show, thanks!
Nice tips again guys thank you!
Two marvelous shows. As a relatively new hobbyist, I learned a great deal from these two episodes on lenses.
It is comforting to know that traveling with just a couple of “multi-use” lenses is okay. I think the tendency for most of us is the fear that we are not going to have the right equipment with us when we travel and that we will never have all of the lenses that we need. The truth is, three or four lenses will cover virtually every situation that most of us will ever encounter. Thank you.
As someone else mentioned, now it’s time to do a show on basic flash.
Good show and good info. Even though I use Sony I can take this info and use it.
Rick in Long Beach
Great show on Lenes!!!! Could you do a show on how Camera Sensor Size affects your photography full frame sensor vs AP-C sensor. For an example an 85mm 1.2 lens on a full frame sensor is going to affect your photo taking how compared to an AP-C sensor how?
Nice show as always Thanks!
Great show guys, anything on Macro?
Good show.
great show
great job guys. I got to tell you that I work for a small town newspaper in Southeast Kansas. Not a lot of other photographers to talk to around here. My photography has been lacking lately. I started watching your show and I feel more inspired and have learned a lot and been inspired by you guys.
Thanks for doing the show. I also started working on a web site. something I’ve been thinking of doing but have not yet done so. Hope to have one up and functioning soon
do more do overs!
Great refresher on lenses! Helped with my next glass purchase. I am priced out Sports/Birding for now.
How about a show on long exposure photography?
Thanks!
Great show, glad you covered a little more Dx lenses. You validated my selection of a Nikon 18-200 VR and Tokina 12-24 for travel.
Great show
Great show as always
excellent as always – thanks
Awesome show guys, I’m a new fan!
Thanks Guys
Hi Guys,
Good show, but why not inform about the AFs VR II 24-120 f4 and the AFs 300mm f4 lenses? For most of this sites audience these may suit their wallet a bit better then the super proff lenses.
I have both and these are great lenses. I know the old 24-120 f4-f5.6 have a bad reputation, but the newer one is actually a very good and versatile lens. May not be as crisp as the AFs 24-70 f2.8, but the longer reach and the VR sometimes makes the difference.
Of course it depends on what you want to do, but I feel these f4 lenses are often overlooked for some reason.
Thanks!
/Per
great show and wow on the equipment your are showing
Great episode yet again. aren’t there macro zoom’s anymore? I guess they are not that good.
have a good one
Thanks
Great info about lenses. Maybe you could do a show on tripods in the future.
The more I watch you the more I appreciate your
talent and information that you share.
I also love what has been done to make the Photoshop User Magazine more user friendly on-line.
My problem is that I would like to take classes from Kelby, but, I watch your recorded shows and although I am supposed to have enough mbps, every couple minutes the show stops in the middle of a sentence and when it starts again I lose some information. I have tried playing it through and reshowing it and it doesn’t help?????? Any ideas…. Thanks Karen Moore
Now all I need is Money!
Great show. I still have my tried-and-true 80-200 f2.8 and love it. I would upgrade but with lenses costing more than the bodies I use, well…
Great show, nice update to your old set of shows on lenses
I don’t like this week show because i cant afford any of these lenses. But you guys did a great job on explaining which lens is good for sports and landscape. Thank you.
Great show!
Great show (as always). Lenses are a tough topic but you guys do a good job at it. Nice to see Matt again.
Great Show Danke
Hi guys, what have you done with your server? I have just had to go to you tube to watch this episode, cause your server keeps cutting out but keep up the good work
I don’t get it, 300 or 300. What was Matt s point?
Good show. I would love RC’s book. Already have Matt’s
Floof and run
Nice show
i enjoy
Great lens refresher 2 part series. Perhaps you could do something on lens filters.
Thanks for the last 2 episodes. LOVED THEM!
I have a question. I shoot a Nikon D60 & a Coolpix S8100, I’m trying to figure out memory cards. I shoot lots of still life, but also some candids (I’d describe myself as an advanced armature), what speed card should I be shooting?
Thanks!!
Love the BIG lens
Nice show! A lot on lenses, but I’m sad for the >1000 bucks lenses … not gonna get one any time soon! hehehehe
Wasn’t this lens band a cheep shot from Larry some episodes ago??
Nice set of shows.
A little personal story about choosing a lens.
When i was going on a 2 week backpacking trip, I rely needed the 18-200 mm lens, because I did not want to cary 2 lenses around. My solution, thinking about what I would shoot moste, and take the lens that could doo the job.
Had a 18-55 and a 70-300 lens. I chose the 18-55, because i expectet to shoot most landscape and tourist shots, the few times i needed my 70-300 i chose to just enjoye the moment, not worry about not having the lens.
Got a lot of grate shot and was happy whit my choice of lens, but I think the 18-200, should bee my next lens.
PS: Hates that the lenses for sports and wildlife is so expencive, two area I relay would like to photograh more.
A Roadie costs less than that big glass!
Thanks for info.
Thanks again for another great show on lenses!
Another great show. I would love to see an episode on some basic camera care(ie lens cleaning, lens switching, cleaning the viewfinder, or hiring an assistant to do all of the above
)
Loving D-town TV – keep up the great work!
Great show this and last week. It is interesting to see where you use the lenses.
I am a Canon shooter so I appreciated the comments about this not just being Nikon.
Hi
Great episode (actually two) on Lenses
I enjoyed the original episodes, back in the early 80s that Scott and Matt did. This was a nice update.
the only thing I find that might help, would be, if you do a series of shots with the different lenses.
You mention concepts like the feel, the distortion, etc. The shallower depth of field, the softness, bringing the background closer (compression, etc)
It would be nice to see a couple shot with an 85 Prime, a 70-200 2.8, the 70-300 f4 to 5.6, to see the differences.
Also, a comparison of the 200-400, vs the primes at the long glass. Showing some of the concepts would be cool.
good general discussion on lenses
Please, can I win the compositing book ?
Still love all the media you produce even if I don’t win…
Very Important Note:
For the past 28 DTOWNTV programs, I cannot turn up the sound volume on your programs (enough).
I know that the problem is NOT my new MacBookPro laptop.
Is there anything that can be done to increase your sound volume?
Many thanks,
I very much look forward to all of your programs.
I am a 38 year, full time practicing Aerial; Commercial photo.
Thanks,
I’ve seen every show. Good to get another’s perspective (pun intended) on lenses. I have RC’s book and don’t shoot film, so the legal DVD would be a welcme prize if chosen; thanks, Jock
wonderful show
As an idea, I will like to see picture done with the lens you mention
Good show and thanks for the tip of renting lenses!
I want a $10k one; have an extra you are giving away.
Another great episode, I really like how you guys explain whats importen without getting stuck in technical details.
Great show. I enjoyed the discussion about the different lenses.
Thanks great information. Can you give me more information on Macro lenses? I am the difference in 100mm macro vs 200mm macro?
The last two shows have been great.
I’d like to see more actual shooting in the program. I remember way back, Scott doing a studio shoot and explaining the lights and Matt shooting out door and back lightling a couple. They were great so more like that would be my request.
I love my 200 micro
Great show! What I like about dtown:
1) great content
2) mix it up sometimes wi Matt
3) the t-shirts, I can’t wait to see what’s on them
I have a question. With the 28-300 now out, with more zoom and about the same aperture range, is there any advantage using the 70-300 over the 28-300. You didn’t get much into it, but the 28-300 seems the same or better where it counts.
I won I won
What a FANTASTIC continuation of episode 108 on lenses guys. One of the lenses I own that was mentioned is the Canon Macro 100mm 2.8 L and THANKS Matt for your reminder that it also makes a great lens for portraits, getting more bang for the purchase price to serve two functions. An idea for a future show, is the custom functions of a camera (ie. ISO expansion, hightlight tone priority, mirror Lockup, etc) features I have been experimenting with recently).
Just in time! Im looking to upgrade lenses and the timing could not be better! Great job guys! Thanks for all the insight!
nice show, great information!
200-400 f4- $7k
400 f2.8- $9k
Great Show!
Nice lenses….nice guys…!
Thank you!
Could you please cover radio flash triggers sometime, pros and cons – expensive and cheap.
Thanks
Such a great show – you’re really settling in and relaxing. Matt & RC seem to work so well together, anticipating each other’s next phrase etc. Well done
Great show guys. Glass drool…
great show, would like to get in the givewaways, specifically for that printer
Great show, of course I’d love the printer or anything else you’d like to give away. Keep up the great shows.
Thinking of getting a macro lens …would like more depth on how to choose one and how to use one
Great show, I agree that 70-200 is awesome as well as 24-70.
I learned a lot about sport and wildlife photography.
I still shot with film as I have an old Kodak camera from the 1910s and Kodak Starmite, Miranda Sensorex II, and Minolta X-700, 2 of these, 1 with motor drive and data back.
I would like to see a show on panorama photography as that is what I like to do best with landscape (scenery) photography.
Thanks, guys – very practical advice. Really appreciate your down-to-earth approach to lens ownership/rentals — especially seeing as how many of us cannot go for the $3K-$5K-$10K versions.
Take care.
Great show, i remember watching the original show on lenses by Matt and Scott a while back, but it was great to get a fresh perspective.
Most of the shooters coming here are beginners / intermediate in comparison to the real pros, so I would suggest if you give out more tips related to such target audience. I’m not saying you only give tips for pros
But the show was great.
Regards,
Kamran
Doing a show on lenses is always something I appreciate… especially your personal comments on which lenses you take with you. Thanks
great show for the canon the cheap way in is the 400mm 5.6 kids sports also only when well lit
Just switched to FX from DX, so the shows are really timely.
I went from the 18-200 to the 28-300 had was surprised how big and heavy the FX lens was in comparison. Seems like you guys don’t care so much about the added weight.
Also, can you use a 105 macro as a portrait lens or is it so specialized on macro?
