Thanks for the link to Douglas Sonders, Always looking for great photographers to follow on Google+.

Any chance you guys could take a look at the new FJWestcott Apollo Orb and Strip? I’m looking at replacing my current softbox and umbrella setup but a little worried about the build quality of these ‘umbrella boxes’ as my current umbrella has gotten pretty mangled from a couple of falls.

    Thanks

  50. Tom P Zachman Jr says:

    Great show as always.

    The bobble head rules.

The info given on this show has usually cleared up confusion and answered questions.

I shoot with a D300, Larrys’ tip on internal camera settings has confused me. I always shoot in raw format, the settings that you recomend I thought would only affect jpeg images. RAW is supposed to be digital, (1′s and 0′s) computer language.

Do these setting influence RAW capture and output?

Great show guys! I think noise reduction does not actually reduce noise, because noise is random. It just removes the hot pixels. So in long exposures I think it is qite essential though it doubles the time you have to wait.

  160. JOCK GOODMAN says:

Great show and here is some criticism. Hey, comment leavers, how about using the spell check? You know, the little red line under the word you misspelled or TYP-Oed.

Speaking of which,,,my Android text feature doesn’t speak Hawaiian, where I live, so all my Hawaiian names, locations, words are GUESSED at by my phone and drive me nuts. Does anyone know if there is an override for AUTOMATICALLY Guessing at what I wrote? i.e. the island Kauai comes out Kayak????

Thanks for all the FREE and NAPP M’ship free info. And, sure, I’d love the dvd set or book, but don’t need the little tripod.
And PLEASE send a seminar staff member to Hawaii. We are LOST and Forgotten in the great void. alohadios, (my own word, so spell check goes nuts) Jock

    Malcolm (UK)

  166. Good show, as always… quick tip to mix strobes firing through separate radio signals: Triggering BXRI main light through the shoe-mounted skyport and using a cable-connected Pocketwizard to trigger 580EX for background effect, both firing at the same time.

Loved RC’s tip/insight on using a white background; the flexibility it provides, and the demo on the relationship between the flash, subject, and said background.

In a future episode, I’d like to learn more about using speedlights w/ bkgds – and how to choose the right background for your subject (ie muslin, velvet, linoleum, plexiglas, etc).

    Thanks!

(was that positive enough, Larry?) ; )

  187. Nikki Cayanong says:

Wonderful show as always! Learned something new, yet again. Quick question: Do color spaces in camera make a difference when shooting in RAW?

    • John says:

      Very nice show, as usual!

      Thank you guys

      PS.
I second the question by Nikki Cayanong. Please enlighten us! Here is a respose for this question I found by “googling” the subject…

Does the color space that I have my camera set to effect how my RAW files are saved?

Unfortunately, it depends on who you ask and what camera manufacturer you are talking to. (I did a lot of research and talking with many people about this and was not able to get a consistent answer on this topic.)

Certainly if you are shooting and saving your files as JPGs, using the Adobe RGB color space is much better than using the sRGB color space. (Side note – if your camera will allow you to work in the ProPhoto RGB color space, then that is even better… more colors!) Some people I spoke with said “Raw is Raw” and it does not matter what color space because you because when you save out your file to a Tiff or Jpeg (for example) you can choose which color space to embed into your file. However, other tech support people told me that which color space you use DOES HAVE AN EFFECT on how your colors are saved in a RAW file format. This may vary between camera manufacturers. My advice is to “be safe” and go ahead and set your camera to Adobe RGB by default…. Or even ProPhoto RGB which is generally only an option on higher end cameras.

  188. Jay says:

    Thanks, guys!

  199. Evan Rasmussen says:

Comments about “what you would do” are great. Add to this by expanding to include “what Scott would do or what Matt would do” in order to include more variations on what an “expert” would do. Then us “non-experts” would have a selection of ideas to choose from.

Re: flash-to-subject vs. flash -to-background ratios: some examples would have been EVER so helpful: Click. Click. Click. Done.
Oops, this is almost a criticism. Maybe I should save it ’til next week?
Oh, oh, too late, I already hit “Submit comment”

RC, Cya soon in the hangouts…

  215. Johnny Dao says:

Great show! Question to RC’s background tip. How much of a difference would it be using different type of lighting? Such as using a softbox, shoot through umbrella, reflecting off of an umbrella, octagon box, etc. Would the drop off of the light be greater or less using different lighting box/umbrella?

  216. Edmond Gee says:

Larry, why do you use the neutral setting?

  217. Todd Langkamp says:

Great show guys. Love Doug Sonders’ work. He had a great tip with just building off one key light and not trying to do everything at once. Its a simple tip but one that’s often overlooked.

  226. Scot Diamond says:

I enjoyed the show. Question that maybe you could cover in subsequent show: I was told that for wildlife photography with a Canon 40D the best ISO is 640 and that there is a “native ISO” of 320. If there is enough light to have no problem with motion blur, is it best at the lowest IOS, for 40D, 100, or is it best at the “native ISO” of 320? Thanks.

  227. Eric Wester says:

    Hi,

Actually not so many news for me this week. The links to a photographer is always interesting though.

  232. Guys…what photog doesn’t use the distance ratio tip..whether they know it or not..DAILY!! Another way to use that tip is to take a picture at a party. If you take a photo in the middle of the room with no background nearby…huge light fall off. Next to a wall in that room…boom bright background. Also..love, love, camera settings talk. Bring on more!

  233. Great tips today fellas. The BG tip from RC will help a few people I know who are learning this stuff.
Well done catch you next week

  234. Hugo Wong says:

Could you do some tips regarding on-camera flash? I know that’s a bit of a taboo subject, but Neil van Neikerk does some awesome stuff with on-camera flash, and for event shooters who don’t have the luxury of bringing lots of gear, it could be extremely helpful.

  246. Bill Guy says:

RC, great show and tell on lighting. One thing I have done in my classes to help is take a string and at a one inch to one foot ratio create a f stop range. We all know that if you set a light at 2.8 ft from a subject and move it back to 4 ft from the subject you get a one stop difference in light. Move it back five and half ft you get another stop difference and so on though the f stop settings (2.8, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22). With a string set with these markings (a piece of white tape) you can show the lighting difference for not only flash to background but flash to subject.

  247. Matt says:
