  29. Zarko says:

Ohh my…I was drooling whole show like a baby… 70-200mm looks so small among those monsters :)
    Great show!

  30. Scott & Matt are the best at creating “photog mentality.” Things that help you SEE the shot. One of those from this episode..getting the ultimate depth of field when you get tight on a subject. The difference between using 70-200mm and 24-70mm is huge for separation..EXCELLENT point! Thanks Guys!

  31. peace gaddis says:

    great show
    thanks for the tips

  32. Nadine Moyer says:

  36. Anthony Stevenson says:

this is the show i have been waiting for, cant wait to episode 2

    thanks guys you rock…..

  37. Peter Nord says:

To think 50 years ago I shot college basketball with a speedgraphic, 12 film holders for the whole game, and then run to the dark room to make one print for the morning paper. 400 ASA, giant strobe, f11 or was it 16, everyone’s in focus, 400 sec exposure made a black background, no distracting crowd. One focal distance locked down the whole time. Wire frame for a view finder. What would today’s digital guys do if they were limited to 24 shots a game and had to pause for the length of time to put in a dark slide, turn the holder around, pull out the slide, and cock the shutter. Imagine!

  38. what a great show. thanks for sharing all this info.

i wanted to suggest something before i forget to. as you know its important to upgrade your camera’s software when a new version of the software comes out. you might show why that’s important and how to do it.

    thanks again…

  39. Matt C. says:

Love the show. I’m currently trying to shoot sports with 70-200 2.8; can’t wait until I can afford a lens like the 300mm or 400mm f/2.8.

  40. Eugene Mak says:

Awesome ep! When is the fashion highlight?! :)

  41. Steve Trochlil says:

    Great show!

  42. Kevin Miller says:

    Awesome show as always…

But now I’m a little sad since I’ll have to wait way too long till the next one. :-(

  43. Trask Smith says:

You guys rock! Scott, I’d love to see another “shoot on the sidelines” contest. I know about the issues the first time around, but surely that could be overcome with some careful planning.

  44. Antonino says:

Thanks for the sports tips!! I shoot my kids sports shots with an older 70-210 “D” version lens.

Focuses real fast but lousy in low light and obviously lacks DOF. I can only dream about 400m 2.8.

If you ever want me to borrow your 400mm let me know. :)

  45. Ron Payne says:

    Good show as always. Thanks!

    Ron

  46. Grzegorz says:

Great episode. If you’d like to do more episodes concentrated on one topic, maybe concert photography will be good :)

    Greetings from Poland

  47. Gary says:

Great show guys, this is part of my Friday chill out, after a tough week, I open a beer and watch your show.

Great Show. Matt was right you should give away the 400mm. The book will do for know :)

  60. Bogdan Achim says:

Greate show, as always! It would be great that in the future you’d do some comparison between the wellknown lens makers (Nikon and Canon) and the cheaper alternatives from Tamron, Sigma etc. 10x

  61. Thanks guys..did a nice job.

  62. Dave Dugdale says:

No offense Matt, but I would rather have the 400mm f/2.8 lens!!

  72. Niels says:

I’m not really into sports photography, but still an interesting show!

  73. Sam says:

Cliff Mautner’s tip is awesome. I did a similar thing a few days ago at a workshop where shooting a model in lingerie in low light (with strobes), focus on the bra in the middle then recompose. Canon guys were struggling though (I shoot Nikon).

Speaking of which, after your sports feature, I’d love to see a similar thing done on shooting models. Lenses, lighting, posing, etc.

  74. Jazmin Miranda says:

    Hi,
Pick me – I watch every Thursday!!

  75. diko says:

some stuff is very very expensive :D

Nice lens how about a loan:)

  78. Bob says:

Love that heavy glass. You guys rock!

  79. Rick Mayo says:

Great job on sports – you sure you don’t want to give away the 400mm lens. I have the perfect camera to put it on. Ha Ha

  80. Karen Kaiser says:

HI.. love the show. Never miss it.
How about a show that zeroes in on ‘holiday shooting’.. the family, the food, ripping open the presents etc. Everybody does it. What lenses and techniques to we use to come away with memorable photographs not just snap shots?

Thanks so much for this show.

  81. Michael Pachis says:

Yo dudes! Just discovered D-Town, great stuff.

  82. Andy K. says:

    Good Show.

  83. Great show. I shoot high school sports and use Nikon 70-200 & 300 2.8 for football (great lenes). In our area the football games are in the evening ( dark ) Lighting on the fields go from so-so to bad. Those lenes still pull it off.

  84. Lionel says:

Your shows are great every week

  85. Barry Turner says:

Gotta love that 400mm f2.8, aka The Big Daddy!!

  86. Leon Kendrick says:

    Cheers,
    John

  91. jose bispo says:

In camera image overlay…how does it work…examples?

  94. Darryl says:

Another great show guys, love these themes stretched out over multiple episodes.

I will have to rent one of those big boys some day ’cause I’ll sure never buy one outright! Yikes.

  95. Ingrid Durfee says:

This is the first time I’ve seen dtowntv, and it has definitely increased my general lens envy. I have a Canon f2.8 70-200mm which I bought to photograph my son’s night-time soccer games last year, and I love the lens. I’d love to have all of the lenses you talked about, but I’ve already blown my photo budget for a while on that one lens, so if you decide to have a lens give-away, I’m in! Thanks for all you guys do.

  96. Great show! Look forward to the next episode and POSSIBLY, a series on wildlife! Yeah, baby!

  97. Warren Donowho says:

I love your shows on lenses. Can’t wait until next week.

  100. Michael Harris says:

    Folks
If you follow Larry’s tip and carry your camera in your hand as he showed you will give yourself a wicked tennis elbow ! especially if you have a battery pack and bracket and a meaty lens. I gave myself a right one last June and its still sore when I pick up my camera!
By the way a Tennis elbow is caused by the way you grip and lift and an object repeatedly not from playing tennis… with your camera.

  101. C Warren says:

Another great show!! Thanks for sharing your vast knowledge.

  102. Shaun Stewart says:

Wow, I’ve never seen the 400 f2.8 next to someone. It really is huge!

  103. Mark A Smith says:

Hi guys love the tee Matt

  104. Jan says:

    Great show as usual

  107. Lewis says:

    Great Show Guys !!

  108. Doug Sundseth says:

Another excellent episode. You guys seem to be on a roll right now.

  109. Dennis says:

Just the info I needed to get ready for the next school sports session. Thanks

  110. Steve U says:

Great show. Really like these in depth shows where you take a topic and fully explore it over the course of a few episodes.

  111. RON says:

    DID I WIN THE 400MM ?

    LOL,

    GREAT INFO AS ALWAYS,

SOUNDS LIKE SHOW 3 WILL HAPPEN, PEOPLE WILL NEED INFO ON PROCESSING IMAGES AND REDUCING NOISE AT HIGH ISO.

  112. Jim says:

    Bill Fortney’s HDR Buddy…….. Thanks

  113. Kent Hodges says:

    Another great show, guys.

  114. Hola!, .. it´s great to see what lens you guys recommend, I´be having some troubles with my 18-200 5.6-6.3 while shooting sports, so I have to use my flash ( in the night ). Any recommendations for using a not so fast lens. Also, is there a episode where you talk about photo journalism. Thanks.

  115. JohnF says:

Great show. Watch it all the time.

Cant wait for the continuation of the show next week.

Great equipment, what do you think about 200mm f/2 and teleconverters?

  127. Rus says:

Buying a side camera strap already! thanks Larry

  128. Dan Wilson says:

Thanks for the info. Most of us don’t have the contacts or credentials for pro or even college sports – so high school or club sports is it for us. How about some tips on shooting sports at that level. Indoors, or outdoors at night is common. And in either case lighting is often poor. Light intensity is low, and light quality is inconsistent. You might find frames in a sequence with a totally different color cast – or even a single frame with a color gradient. Other than asking Adobe to add white balance to the graduated filter tool in lightroom ( or in addition to asking Adobe for that ) what tips do you have for dealing with shooting sports in low ‘quality’ light – not just low intensity light.

  129. Alan says:

Another great show! How about a show on off-camera flash techniques and using remote triggers (Pocket Wizards vs Radio Poppers for example)?

  130. Gary Sousa says:

Great show, just what I like.

  131. Richard Mark says:

Good tips again. ty guys love it!

  132. KIat Chun says:

Thank you for covering the lens topic for sports photography. I really like it !!

  133. Mic says:

Great show today boys, funny you talk about 400mm for football games, come and try an Australian football game where the ground is twice as big!

Looking forward to next weeks show on settings etc because once you have the gear, it is more important to know how to use it!

  134. Evan Rasmussen says:

You should give away another trip with Scott to shoot a pro or college event.

  135. Sandis Kajins says:

Keep up the good work guys! Love your videos.

  136. Bonnie Fiser says:

Great show. Would love to win the book.

  137. Robert Impellizzeri says:

Just wondering…..When you buy the 400mm BEAST does it come with a Gym membership??? Looks like you need one just to lift the lens..lol

  138. Theo says:

    Great show as always!!!!!!!!!!!

  139. Kathy B says:

Thanks again for another great show!!

  140. Great Show as usual!!!!

  142. Shelly says:

sure would love to get my hands on that book!

  143. Michael Tomshack says:

Food vs Glass… How many meals must I give up for the 400 f2.8..

  144. Mathew says:

    you fellas are the bomb!!

  145. Edwardson W. Laohoo says:

Anyway let me try again, how about tips on, and I hope I am not asking for something you did again, but macro photography, including product photography. Ring lights, to back drops, thanks again for a great show, great topic.

Thanks for the great sports shooting tips.

  165. Mike says:

Hey guys, great topic today and some good info on lens characteristics.

Matt, would love your book – but let’s be honest, I’d REALLY like that 400mm 2.8 (in a Canon L series) even better :-) Woo Hoo…

Keep up the great work !

  166. Scott Stover says:

Great show, can you say lens lust!!! The 400 2.8 looks awesome. Keep up the great work, I look forward to fridays just to see what you guys come up with.

Thanks for the fast glass tele show. I am planning on a 300 2.8. I would like further explanation of the focus memory lock/ set future. Does the Nikon 300 2.8 VRII have this option with a D300 body? TIA

    • Ross says:

Yes, and the body isn’t a factor. It’s all on the lens. To simply set the focus point, press the set button, then 1 of the 4 memory buttons. Then, shoot at your leisure and when you anticipate the action will be at one of your preset points, press that button, and you’re good to go.

Very interesting I hope I win the lotto. Wanted to point out that you can get in a lot of practice shooting children’s sports. It is easy to stand where the pros would stand and hone your skills. If you bring pictures back to the same team you also can make some money selling them to the parents.

  234. Ross says:

I’ve been thinking about buying a 70-200. The question is whether to go with the IS version or not. I’ve heard a few people tell me that if I’m primarily shooting outdoors during the daytime, I don’t need to spend the extra $$ on the IS version as the shutter speeds will be fast enough to get a crisp image. What’s your take on that issue?

  235. Bob says:

Great show! Did you ever total up the price of the lenses sitting on the table? Wow! Where is your studio again? (ha-ha)

I’ve used that 400 f/2.8 for some very specialized corporate work. In one case, I was up in a helocopter with the 1.7tc on it, trying to look down an oil company’s flare to see if there was something damaged. Like trying to take a picture of a black bear at the back of a cave. It worked flawlessly – I got the shot that showed exactly what was going on. Well worth the money.

  295. Mark Papke says:

Hi guys, just wondering, given the number of shots you would be taking, do you still suggest shooting in raw for sports photos. I don’t know, just seems like a awful lot of post processing, of course you guys probably know how to do it pretty fast. Just curious, thanks.

In case you guys actually read these haha, I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice. I shoot food quite often, I’m a Nikon Shooter and am thinking of getting an 85mm lens. 339. Steve from Germany says:

Great show, as always. I’ve got the 70-200 2.8 for my D90, and shot a lot of cross-country for the high school this season — for the individual runners 2.8 was great, but when I wanted to capture a “pack” running together, had to decrease the aperture to 4+ to get the key players in focus. Still don’t feel like I got the “sweet spot” aperture that allowed me to get a good balance between focus and separation from the background. Thanks!

  340. Mirek says:

    Hi! Great show, great gear.

  356. Dear Scott,

I would like to ask your opinion. If i’m on a tight budge, which one would you prefer a 70-200 f4 IS or a 70-200 f2.8? I am using this lenses for just a hobby and for my kids…which one are you willing to sucrifice, the aperture or the IS?

  365. Hi,
I just I bought the Nikon 70-300mm. I like the performance but my heart is to get the 70-200mm F2,8. I am not a pro, only starting out with photography, so I thing the 70-300mm on D80 will do it for me until I make so money to buy the big F2,8.

  387. Jesper Mathiesen says:

    You Rock… :-)

  388. William Bryant says:

    Nice important topic.

However, I wonder how much of your target audience is professional vs. amateur. Therefore , although the lens you covered are great, a little more focus on the ability to shoot sports when you don’t own multiple thousand dollar plus lenses.

How to get it done with a little less. We may still be talking a thousand or two, but not twenty to thirty thousand.

    For your consideration.

    Wm

Wow, What a great week! I can’t wait until part two! I just purchased my 70-200 2.8 IS and it’s amazing! It really is already my go to lens and the work horse of the collection now!

  418. Bob says:

I agree that a faster lens can give you the option of either extra speed to freeze sports action, or, you can use the shallower depth of field to separate your subject from the background.
For the latter case, is there an advantage to using a faster lens to isolate the subject from the background, or, can you do just as good of a job in post processing with Photoshop ?

Great web series, and a great episode… Thanks.

  419. Andrew Smith says:

Great show as always. Drooling over the glass you guys get to play with. Wish my wallet was fat enough to get me a 400 2.8…

  420. TJantunen says:

    Great show as always

  421. James Yan says:

    Thanks guys. Another great show!

  422. Was wondering, is it the surface area of the glass that determines the f-stop? Bigger area, more photons that get focused on the sensor?

  423. Santiago says:

Very interesting show. Of course some of the gear is way out of reach for regular people, but of course sports is probably the most money demanding specialty in photography.
Looking forward to your next show!
    Greetings from Chile.

  424. MIlton Hee says:

Love the show especially this sports series. Lots of good info about lenses.

    400 f2.8…WOW.

  448. Teb Kaylish says:

    Thanks, Guys, for the show.

One major gripe/complaint: an issue I think could be of tremendous help. You talk about lenses and the importance of aperture (ƒ2.8 vs. ƒ5.6, for instance) but without an example, is very hard to ‘picture’ what you guys mean.

I think you guys should provide photos as examples so that us viewers can fully understand what you mean. I myself shoot all the time so understand and fully know. But for a novice, beginner, amateur, how are they supposed to understand what you’re talking about? They don’t know about bokeh etc. In effect, just ‘saying’ “ƒ2.8 is much better than ƒ5.6″ doesn’t mean much until we actually see a side by side comparison to fully grasp what you’re saying.

Providing photos to illustrate what you’re saying would be very helpful. And I don’t think I speak for myself.

    Cheers.

  449. Skip Wolff says:

Matt I have your Layers Book #1 and love it would love to have your #2

Oh, and of course more of you guys…maybe an on-location shoot with off-camera lighting?

  453. Joe Levine says:

Hey guys, really like the fact that you did a show that was topic specific… Sports, lenses to consider and why, dof, etc. Would like to see more shows like this tailored towards a specific shoot. I recently got a 70-200mm VRII and can testify that spending a little more for some quality glass pays off. Never saw images with such clarity and vibrance until I snapped this lens on.

  454. Gene A. Smith says:

Thanks for the tip on the 400mm.

Question, how do you hold a long lens on a monopod & shot with the second body, Is there a trick to the balancing act that one has to do? Thanks

  463. Derrick Russ says:

Thanks for the sports tips guys. Unfortunately our college season is over for home games and no playoffs on the schedule this year but this will come in handy next year. I imagine that your follow up sports tips will cover different focusing techniques?

  496. jock says:

Please DON’T tell all the “wannabe” sports shooters to ask for sideline passes. It’s tough enough for a pro. Simple answer is: work your butt off, pay your dues and in a few years maybe you will EARN your way in. There is a reason that it’s tough to get in. We all started shooting at the bottom. thanks– Keep dTown coming.

  541. Johnna says:

It would be great to win Matt’s book! When shooting sports with a monopod (no ballhead), do you loosen the telephoto lens collar so you can turn the camera from horizontal to vertical?

    Thanks for another good show.

  542. Mick Ryan says:

On the topic of sports, I would love some tips on shooting minor hockey. Those poorly lit arenas that are surrounded by dirty glass and protective netting, and tying to get the ice to look bright white while still keeping the players sharp, in a very fast game. I’m looking for miracle information here that would allow me to shoot f5.6 at iso1600 and still get 1/500th of faster shutter speeds ;)

  543. Scott says:

Can’t afford that huge glass, but always get something out of your shows. Thanks!

  562. Sandro Rizzi says:

I shoot a lot of amateur boxing matches and use the 50mm 1.8 almost exclusively. Flash is not allowed which makes it very challenging with a D70s in usually very poor light. Any recommendations short of replacing my equipment, would be appreciated. Great segment.

  587. Don Blackett says:

Was late watching the show this week, but it was informative. As a suggestion for the focus of a show, how about discussing the differences between PSE 9 and CS5 as far as how they would impact an enthusiast as opposed to a pro?

    Thanks a lot

    Hi,
I think with the following zoom lens you can get even better results, maybe you can review it as well. They have it for Nikon and Canon.

    http://photojojo.com/store/awesomeness/camera-lens-mug/

  591. Adrian says:

    Hey Guys! Awesome show!
Could you maybe cover a bit more about post-processing? Specifically tips on sorting and finalizing photo shoots and how to save time in the digital “darkroom”?

  592. Shawn H says:

Love the show. 2 thoughts. 1st, it would be nice if you mention when the podcast will come out. Do you post at the same time every week? 2nd, how long after the podcast comes out do we have to enter the giveaways you do so often? Do i have until the next podcast or do I have to enter the day it comes out?
Here is a topic idea as well. You talk about tungsten light and using gels a lot. Can you explain how to determine what the light source is and when to use the gels?

  593. John Blackwood says:

Is anyone else having trouble viewing this site using Firefox? The links are there and I can view the video but all of the web content does not display. I am only having an issue on this site.

  598. Richard Reeve says:

Great episode guys. Are you sure that you won’t give away the 400 f2.8?

  599. Scott Rullmann says:

Is Matt’s book available in an e-book format? I would love to have it on my iPad right next to my computer. I am trying to go all digital with books.

  600. Greg Payne says:

    Enjoyed the show.

  601. Scott Fritz says:

For basketball, I like the 85mm F1.8, but I have just done one year of basketball photography.

  602. Kellie Cook says:

    Another great show!

  603. Scott, your tips on sports has made a big difference in my sports photography. Thanks, Jack

  604. Great lens coverage gentlemen.
    Thanks

  605. Earl Dodd says:

My first time viewing great show. from Canada eh!

  606. I’m all with You wrt shallow depth on sports. BUT IMHO f/2.8 is a bit too low. I get better results f/4 when I’m shooting sports outdoors (see website for example). Indoor, it’s always as dark as cave and f/2.8 is the only way to go.

  607. J. DeRuosi says:

    Thanks for another helpful episode.

  608. Doug Felts says:

I’m with Matt – how ’bout the 400 as a giveaway!

You might mention autofocus settings for action sports.

Another great show!! For now I will just have to dream about the big glass. sigh

  615. Ed Adams says:

Remember most of the High School football games are at night under bad lighting conditions (Friday Night Lights) Don’t buy the wrong lens for nighttime sports if you want to stop the action. The 4.5′s will not stop the action in most cases. This episode is one of the best informational podcasts on sports shooting I have seen too date. Great show Scott and Matt. Keep up the awesome work!

    Ed Adams

  616. Cazimiro says:

  624. Thanks for the knowledge and the laughs guys!!!

  625. Christian says:

Boys, PLEASE …! Don’t always just speak about the differences when you compare lenses. Show pictures/examples of the “way more beautyful depth of field” so that we non-professionals start to understand what you talk about – and make our own judgements on those comparisons.
Love your show – stuck width you since the beginning of nikon-dtowntv years ago. But today was way too much “speak” and not enough “show”.
    Cheers from germany!

Excellent show this week guys. I have friends who have the “big fast” glass shown in this episode and while they always offer to let me use them I have yet to accept. I’m not afraid that I’ll drop the lenses; just afraid that I’ll want one. ;~D
