Love the segment on cases. There is a case that i use and it has a unique feature that I haven’t seen elsewhere. The case actually converts to a cart that can carry your checked bags. I have put over 100 lbs of luggage on this cart. Check it out at portercase.com .

however, I do have my doubts about that ittybitty lock on that big bag. they’ve just pried open your trunk and will not open the bag because it has a lock on a zipper….I’m thinking pocketknife

Good job guys. I did want to mention that you can make a quick access for your custom settings in a Nikon by making your custom settings your top item in “my menu”, then going to “custom setting menu”, choose “f”, and assign a button (ex. FUNC. button) to “Access top item in My Menu”. Now you have easy and quick access to your custom settings. Hope this helps someone.

Cheap Shots: I use a sisal twine. Stretch is minimal. I have a loop at one end to put my foot through when I pull the camera up. The carriage or eye bolt is a 1/4 inch x 20. For storage the twine is wrapped around an old toilet paper roll with a scissor cut on each end to hold the end of the twine in place. It can be crushed for tight storage. The bolt can be stored in the roll.
Travel lens: I always need to have that one lens for indoor or low light. Arghhh!
Camera bag: How about a camera bag that doesn’t look like it holds camera equipment. If a thief is looking to grab a bag, chances are a camera looking bag is his first choice as the take is probably at least $2 grand.

I’d take a look at some of the other Thinktank bags. I roll around with the Airport Security, and more often than not people think its a luggage bag.
I’d also take a look at the Restrospective 20 bags as well.. discrete.

Another informative show. I especially enjoyed the bag segment.
As for custom settings I agree that Canon’s access is superior. I have a D700 and access custom settings via the info button on the back as it gives direct access to the Custom Settings menu.
A double click will highlight either the Custom or bank settings, depending on where it was previously. I find this the quickest way to access these settings.

Another informative show, especially the bag segment.
I agree Canon have the best implementation of accessing custom settings.
I access Custom settings on my D700 via the info button on the back. A double click will highlight either the custom or bank settings, whichever was selected previously. I find it the quickest way to access them.

Yo Dudes! Good show as per usual. The only thing that made me suspicious were RCs bag tips, which were good but had a tiny feeling of a Think Tank infomercial, could’ve cleared that up by showing one or two alternatives.
It wasnt designed to show Alternative bags.. It was designed to show the three -Thinktank- bags that I use, and why they could come in handy.
More often than not – we are big fans of sharing with you the gear we -use-. If we start showing alternatives and others, then we’re a product testing lab.. which would get in the way of us giving you sweet tips.

Great show as always. Loved the <$5 tripod in 'Cheap Shots' segment. Got 28-300 before my recent trip to Boston, if you going Jay Maisel style as I do, it works great on DX body as well. Keep up the great work.

Guy’s I liked the bag segment. I am constantly changing bags. I use 3 different bags and I’m shopping for a good roller for a fourth. It all depends on my assignment. I run two different types of Domke satchel/shoulder bags and a Lowepro backpack. It all depends on what I need to carry.
I have interchangeable compartments that I can switch between the bags.

My wife and I are very keen of travelling photography. We both carry Canon 5D mkII full frame cameras.
Nikon has made a very versatile 28-300mm lens and you mentioned that Canon also has it. Unfortunately as far as we understand it, Canon only has the big and heavy 28-300mm L series lens which is very intimidating for travel purposes.
Just in case we missed something, do you know any 28-300mm for Canon which is really design for travel purposes (ie. light and smaller than the gigantic 28-300mm L lens)?

Terrific show! I just asked Matt this week about his take on bags on Facebook and now you guys have a demonstration on them! Great timing! RC did a great job on showing off the various ThinkTank bags, although I think you better pull him aside and tell him that the Canon lenses will not fit on his Nikon camera!

I got the SpeedRacer. Latest Think Tank acquisition was the Shoulder Harness V2.0. I also had the V1.0 and was thinking of converting that to look like a V2.0

Great show as always guys. The bag reviews were extremely helpful. I’m going shopping! About the custom settings menu. On the D300s you can access both the custom and shooting menus directly via the Info button on the back of the camera.

I really liked RC’s session on bags. I have an Airport International and never thought about using the steel cable to secure the bag while in the trunk of a car. Great advice. Keep up the good work guys!

The Custom Settings bank can also be changed by pressing the INFO button on the back of the camera twice.
Just select whether you want to change the Shooting Menu Bank or Custom Settings Bank and it will take you to the bank selection screen.
Also, the D7000 implemented the user modes on the dial just like the Canon has had for many years

Thanks for the new episode. Even though I shoot Nikon gear, I agree with Matt that the custom settiings access is better implemented on the Canon. Maybe Nikon will notice and include it on their next DSLRs.

The new D7000 also has a hardware switch for U1 and U2 custom settings on the mode dial. I would love to say that this information is first hand but they haven’t started shipping them in the UK yet

Hello. I have a topic I would be interested in hearing more about: Old manual lenses and our DSLRs. I own a 50mm 1.2! Really! Of course it is an old manual Nikor lens. I can use it on my D200 and have, but I’m reluctant to use it a lot. I’m concerned about wear on the contacts within the D200 body as well as what I loose in terms of the metering and maybe other processing done within the lens. Any thoughts?

Once again, you guys have done a Great Job! Hey Matt, speaking of Bags, why don’t you show the slide presentation you gave on PSW a couple of years ago about – “You know you’re a photog if you don’t have enough bags or need another bag”. It was something like that (don’t remember the exact title).

One comment on the Airport Security bag. The last time I flew and tried to keep my bag locked, the handlers made me unlock it. Unfortunately, that allows anyone working there to go through your bag and take stuff out.
Also bags don’t hold up to a simple sharp knife.
These would help against the thief that would just do a grab and go. Built in cable is great – as long as you remember to use it.

Great show. Message to Larry. Love the segment. For the tripod replacement you might want to try Q-power line. Light, strong, no stretch. Even stronger then steel. you get it in a kite shop. Dymeema is an alternative too.

An alternative to the makeshift tripod suggestion is to use a retractable keychain with the one end adapted to a screw that goes into the camera’s bottom plate.

Overall nice show; however, Larry and the cheap tripod could have at least made the cord the right length. That was really goofy that it was so short.

I was very interested in the 28-300mm. In your opinion for someone who uses a D70s would this be a good travel lens or should I invest in a 18-200 mm dx lens? I will traveling to New York City in December and want to travel light.

I really liked RC’s bag segment, but am curious if a canon xti (or any small camera) with a battery grip attached will fit in that sling-o-matic 10. I like that size a lot and already have stuff bigger than that, but would like the smaller bag to walk around with. Looked but didnt see any reviews that really made it clear if that would fit.

G’dday, Calling from Australia!! I love D-town BUT can you introduce an index search. Many time I watch the TV and say that is useful but when I want to find the section again it takes me hours of going through the episodes. Like looking for White Balance Caps. I cannot remember where it is.

great show as always. especially liked Mr Concepcion….excellent presenter. One suggestion: there is a picture hanger that hangs just above Scott’s head and it looks like an optical error on the screen every time I see the show. Is there any way you can make it invisible? Just mildly annoying against what is otherwise a superb backdrop. thanks

When you talk about camera hints, menus settings and so on, would you please advise the specific camera you are working with at that time and then what cameras have/have not got those options…The camera hints today are on what camera? They are not on a D90….
