Yeah, I’m the first! Great show guys. “You guys rock!”

Suggestion, how about tips on how to take photo of young kids or maybe a full class should be made out of that for kelbytraining.com.

Mat – I’ve done the shooting into the light trick and it’s harder than it sounds. The light really has to be low. I’ll have to try it again another day.

And props to Joe McNally. He’s just golden..great to see him on the show this week.

    Great show as always.

One small pet peeve, suspect I’m not the only one. The intro music is too loud…I find I have to mute my speakers every time. The audio for the rest of the video is fine.

Any chance you can tone down the decibels just a little?

  116. Greg Jordan says:

You guys are doing a bang up job. Great tips. Great guest. See ya next time!

I’m going to try Matt’s ND grad filter tip.

Fantastic show Scott and Matt. Even though I’ve been shooting for 30-some years, I still pick up some good tips on every one of your episodes. Keep up the great work.

Another great show!! Thanks for doing the show.

  120. Justin says:

Will you guys ask Larry Becker a question for me? Does he have any “Cheap Shots” tips for a DIY D700? I mean, a D3s would be nice, but I don’t need to be greedy… I’d be happy with a D700!

  121. Adriab says:

Great tip especially with the filter. I shot that same area in Oregon years ago. Wish I had this tip back in the day. Thanks guys!

    good show. Come to Phoenix!

  126. I really enjoyed your show this week!

    Phillip

  127. Marc says:

Why do you have to use ND filter and keep moving it up and down when the subject is not conducive for its use. May be in this case you can later on photoshop that gradient effect during post-processing…just a thought.
But I still want one of those goodies!
    Marc

  128. j.myers says:

There is a thing called a yoga block that looks like the car window device. If you are a do it yourselfer this block can be cut to the same shape. They come in different colors. I do not know if the price is comparable though.

  129. Hannah Bishop says:

I loved the show this week! A photographer you should consider featuring at the end segment is James nachtway…he does amazing stuff.

  130. Ken Blye says:

Awesome show… Nice job on the Puffin Pad!!!

  131. Sotiris S says:

As always a very good episode. Great work, cool tips but what about adding five more minutes to the length of the show? like a mini series… taking you from point a to point z …. (that one sound familiar) . I am telling this because although i catch up the show by the episode 37 i have watched all the series (some episodes twice)… huge amount of knowledge there but you have to … stitch them together to get the full frame picture ! ….
So give a try to add five more minutes… ( try +2 EV it could help! lol)

  132. Denny E Barnes says:

Great show as always! Matt, that was just a light breeze. The winds not blowing on the Oregon coast until it hits 50mph and above…. ;>)

Tip: Matt put a gun on the end of Oregon and not a gone….;>)

Also it might be nice to tell us who the winners are of your great give-a-ways…Just a though

    Love Nik plugins. Great show!

  201. Hi Guys! Love the show, thanks so much for the great info. Just a nit picky thing, your pronunciation of Oregon :0) Not a long “o” on the end of Oregon, it is more of a “oregin” sound :0) Hope that makes sense. I would love a Nik plugin too ;)

  202. Joseph Chan says:

Love those tips increases my work flow.

I bought a rubber hood. Seemed a great idea. But, it was for the 18-200, and it appeared that the hood was adapted for 28-200 only.
I checked, and it seems that there is ABSOLUTELY NO rubber hoods for 18mm zoom lenses (18-135 18-200…). Also, this fact is never mentioned on the stores on line.
    That’s a pity.
If you know of one, please let me know.
    Thanks in advance

  218. Allan Johns says:

May have been asked before but will you guys ever include anything on third party lens, Tamron, Sigma etc. I’ve met pro photographers in Europe who use Sigma lens, so a little D-Town coverage would be appreciated.

  229. Jack says:

Fantastic as usual. Can you please do a discussion on care and keeping of memory cards including formatting/erasing and wear and tear on the camera pins when removing/inserting. Does that occur? Should one use a card reader or cable connect the camera directly to computer for downloading? What to look for when buying cards? And any other thoughts about how to best use this vital component. Thanks a lot ~ Jack

Matt love the tip on the grad filter. It encourages me to get the tripod and filters out of the closet. VR and Lightroom have made my camera bag alot lighter. ;)

Speaking of LR… I’m so geeked up about it!!! I’m a wedding shooter who always shoots in RAW. So LR is 90% of my workflow… Between Scott’s LR books and Matt’s “Killer Tips”, you two are the best. I would love to see some tethered shooting tips.

I’m a nikon shooter, and I was originally upset of the new format for D-town. Looking back, I don’t know why I was so pestimistic. This is way better… great job guys! More guests, more studio ideas, and Larry’s segements are my fav. Sorry guys, I can’t help it… I’m cheap ;)

    Hi from Poland :-)

  276. Doug says:

Just starting to explore Lightroom plug-ins. Do you have something like a plug-in workflow? An approach that is a little more logical and a lot less random? Or is it too situation-specific for that?

    Great show as normal.

May I suggest a show idea?

I know you did lens in series 1, but only up to 200mm

Could you do a show on long glass, as I’m a nikon I’m really insterested in upgrading to the the newer 200-400mm f4 vr2. Perhaps get Scot Diussa to explaning nano coated and the difference in vr1 and vr2, of course there is 400,500,600mm + canon 1200mm.

    thanks

Great show guys! Thanks for such a great service.

A possible suggestion for future shows: how about a comparison of Aperture vs Lightroom as photo management software? I am growing out of iPhoto and am thinking of one of the more professional packages. I don’t really have enough free time to test them thoroughly so a comparison from you and maybe a guest Aperture user like Scott Bourne would be really helpful.

    Thanks again

  371. Martin says:

    Top show, cheers.
That quiet shutter on the d3s would be so useful for some of my shoots in theatres. Just can’t justify upgrading from the d3.

Hey guys – been watching your shows since the beginning, but never left a comment ’til now. So, my question is:

Matt–this time I would like to thank you for your tips about using negative clarity brush on faces! amazing!

  397. I’ll have to check out the V-flats. I used to use 4′x’8′ sheets of 3/16″ or 1/2″ foam core, then score one side at the 2′ mark to create the V-hinge.

I’d also like to recommend a photographer of the week, Andrew Wheeler, his site is AutoMotoPhoto.com He is one of the premier people shooting motorcycle roadracing today. The great thing about Andrew’s work is that his shots are as much about the place the race is at, as it is about the action on track.

  425. Michael Wiensczyk says:

Your grad filter trick reminds me of my darkroom techniques for dodging or burning on print paper. Moving the dodge tool in a way to soften edges of exposure adjustment.

    You guys Rock!!!

I was going to say something about no cheap shots, but Scott you gave two. One on the cheaper way to get the V-flats and the other on the cart.

In a future show could you guys do a spot on long exposure twilight or night photos? Something that shows how to NOT get those flares around lights? I assume it is just timing it for the right time in the evening so the long exposure for the sky and surrounging areas balances with the lights from buildings, etc. Am I on the right track, or is there a way to get good captures well after sundown?

  438. eydbii says:

Love the show! Watch it every week… all the way from Faroe Islands :)

Hey guys, thanks for all your programs they ROCK!!! there you go Matt I said you Rock happy :)

Actually I have a request for a question you can bring up in your show.(if you want)
I think it was you Scott that the old DTownTV series talked about shooting in Raw, and also playing around with the “set picture control” (on the Nikon cams ofc) now my question is…. does it have any effect at all, on my end result of a picture if I shoot in Landscape or portrait mode when i’m still shooting in Raw??? will there be a difference I cant change in the Raw file?

    Regards Simon

You know, I’ve been watching the show seen Ep1 and I would love to see some kind of “Studio shooting 101″, you know, with some typical scenarios and lighting setups. clever tip on the ND filter

  546. Great episode. I have a question. I shoot with a Nikon D700 and use the 24-70mm lens a LOT. I like to use the pop up flash as a commander for my SB 800 BUT lately I’ve noticed a black semi circle on the bottom of a lot of my pictures. I imagine it’s because the lens is long and the pop up flash is close. Is there any way AROUND this?

    Thanks.

    Chris

Random observation / question for a future show:

I see what Matt is suggesting for tall foreground objects and the ND filter.

Is there an equivalent Lightroom trick if you are trying to use the graduated adjustment filter. I’ve got photos where I’d like to darken the sky, but some part of the foreground (e.g., a person) needs to be preserved.

    QUESTION:

Imagine you are at horse or car racing, close to the track at finish line, you want to take that 90 degrees shot with blurred background and sharp subjects. I tried last weekend, with Nikkor 70-300mm and it just can’t auto focus as fast as I pan camera, tried manual to catch at least that 90 degrees shot, didn’t work out very well.

How do you set focus in these situations, when you know where subject is going to be but you cant’t reach that place ?

My window “mount” solution: Years ago I bought a thing that slides on the edge of the car window as padding & slobber-sopper for a dog. It’s basically foam pipe insulation with a washable cover and clips to hold it on the window’s edge. It’s works great for out-the-window shooting especially if you don’t have a dog!
Thanks for another great show! rj

  700. Charlie says:

Hi Guys, great show. Two tips I’d love to see,
    1. Now that CS5 offers help with HDR, I’m thinking I want to start attempting, almost affraid to admit this, but I’d love for someone to explain bracketing (I know what it is, but not sure the best way to set up my camera)
    2. Tips and tricks for shooting the best possible B+W would be great too.

    Thanks

  701. Dennis says:

    Another great show guys.

  702. Richard Bracegirdle says:

    Hi Scott and Matt,
Where d’ya get the studio model ?? She’s a stunner !! (Never mind the V flats – I was lookin at the model !!) Great show again – and a really cool tip with the ND grad Matt. Thanks – I’ll give that a try next time I’m out.
Keep up the good work !!
    Regards,
    Richard

  703. lynn says:

    Great show :-)

  704. John Gamble says:

After Matt was talking about the polarized sunglasses and the waterfalls, won’t a polarizer work as both a polarizer and a neutral density filter. Two tools in one? Great for waterfalls for slow shutter speeds and glare cutting.

  705. JD Smith says:

Hey guys, one other point about using the “L” bracket on your camera is that you don’t loose the height of where your lens is at. The lens basically stays in the exact same area. That is hot!
Hey, when am I going to win some cool stuff? :-)

  706. James says:

Signed up as a NAPP member a couple of months ago, watch you guys on D-Town and Photoshop User TV and really appreciate how much you share your knowledge, fun to watch too.

Great show; really like the tips and equipment recommendations. Can you do a few spots on Macro photography (lens, lighting. tubes etc)

  710. keep up the great work. you guys rock

  711. Ron Twisk says:

Great show, I’ve seen them all and learned a lot.

Question: Can you spend some time on “lens calibration”. My EOS 50D has this option and I’ve tried a few different ways to calibrate my 70-200 2.8 with 1.4 extender (which combination has severe back-focus), but I can’t get it right. The scale seems not large enough…….

    Thanks in advance!
    Ron.

  712. Robert says:

Great stuff! You guys are the best.
    God Bless you all!

Thanks once again for a great episode.

    • Danny says:

Great show as always, guys! As for a suggestion, how about some workshop-style episodes? (a la Photoshop World, where we spend 20 minutes with a practical example on how to do something, from beginning to end)
Matt has done some of that with the photos using light, but it could be nice to see some even more developed ones.
Oh, yes, and giveaways rock! :-)

  719. Greg Cary says:

    HELLO
I’m sure this is somewhere i see your cameras and computers tethered so you can take the shoot snd have it shown on you computer so you can see if it is right or needs to be adjusted. abd you can move directly into edit mode . is there a special program or tether for this.Is there a training program that covers this. when i discuss this with other photographers i seem to get the run around to these quetions. even some photoshops aviod the question. so although they sell the stands seem to have no clue as to how to make this happen
I would appriciate all the assistance i can get.
