Anything on this would be appreciated, thanks for all your help, every week.

    Great tip from Cliff.

  29. Guys, yet again you served a very delicious meal of ideas and useful tips – loved the appetizer for silhouette shots, something I wanted to try for a while; the main course of super-fast-glass-super-sharp-photos was simply fantastic and the desert – the cheap shot just topped it off! Thank you, THANK YOU :-) Thank you

  30. William Chinn says:

Published 5/28, available for viewing 6/1. I’m having anxiety attacks waiting this long. Now if only NAPP News would be available. More Larry the Cheap.

  31. Dave says:

Love the show. Quick newbie question. When shooting two or more people, where is the best place to set my focus point? I’ve ruined many a shot having only one of my subjects in focus.

    Thanks,
    D

    • Focus point always on the eyes; now sharpness of both subjects really depends a lot on composition, and the depth of field you want. if you want shallow depth of field then your composition should have both parties eyes near the same distance from the “film”/sensor plane, open the depth of field up some and there is a little more room, increase the distance of the subjects to the film plane, and you have more room.

  32. Tony cupero says:

very cool show keep it up

  33. Hey guys great show the tip from Cliff was an eye opener…It was like getting hit over the head with a frying pan…You know that at f1.4 the depth of field is less than 1 inch at near minimum focus distance, so any movement in the “film” plan changes focus point, but it did not register till just now thanks in part to old habits with cheap lens’s that just died.

    Thanks,

  34. John Schultz says:

Great tip from Cliff Mautner on focusing

  35. Rick says:

Scott…..You’ve got to be kidding if you really never new about why there are 51 focus points on a Nikon.

  36. Deena Spector says:

    Love the show. Great information.

  37. Josh Berg says:

    As always, great show!

  39. Tommaso Pigliapoco says:

    Thanks for another great show!

  40. Tony Vasquez says:

Good show!! Where can I get a shirt like Matt was wearing ????

  41. Bonnie Fiser says:

Great show again. On Larry’s cheap shot last week about the crossbar, how is the crossbar held up/connected to the light stands? Great tip but not sure how to hold it up.

    Thanks

    • Larry B says:

Any number of clamps could do the trick. I usually use “Super Clamps” but something like $1 A-clamps from the hardware store work too.

  42. Alex Maxwell says:

Great show, guys. Keep the tips coming!

  43. Richard Eberhardt says:

  54. Sotiris Stroungaris says:

    Yet Another Great Episode…

Great show as always guys. I am very glad to see D Town back. For anyone that takes a look at the inspirational photographer’s site, take a look at the time lapes video of him editing a photo.

  56. Tim Sorrells says:

This is your best video by far in terms because you have broken into seamless sections, the goods for the pro’s and amateurs, and the video section. Thanks again for another top notch episode.

    Regards,
    Tim Sorrells
PS: Matt, I tired some the sun flare shots. The subjects thought the shots were bad even after I explained why I did it. The silhouette shots with a touch of EV sold!

Thanks for all the Great Tips!!!

Is there a quick way to move the FOCUS BRACKETS? Sometimes it seems like it takes forever for the BRACKETS to move from one side of the frame to the other. Maybe I should hit the center button to quickly get it to move to the center, and then move them the rest of the way after that.

  66. Oooowww! The Stock photo case :D
    Great show guys!

  79. Peter Durk says:

Good info as always. Following on from Cliff Mautner’s tips. I was having similar problems, in particular when shooting in continuous mode. The first shot after recomposing was in focus but the subsequent shots were not.
    Thanks again, Peter

  80. sm says:

    Another cool show..love it…

  81. Hi guys, excellent show. Regarding Cliff’s advice on compose first and focus then, don’t you think that the good old manual focus is still better than moving the autofocus point ? Manual focus can also precisely focus where you want it, with no motion of the camera…
    Alessandro

  82. sloik says:

    sweet :)

  83. Joe H says:

Another great show guys! Keep it up. Thanks for all the great tips.

  94. T. Trahn says:

    Hi! Very interesting episode!

What I would like to see is a whole episode on macro photography. Something like what apertures you can use, which lenses, what are the differences between those lenses (Is f4 at a 50mm the same as f4 on a 90mm lens? Can you use a 180mm macro lens without tripod? etc.) and how I get even bigger macros (extension tubes, converters etc. an their effects on different lenses).

  96. Øystein Haarvik says:

Very nice show, this time. Clean, organized and smooth production. You guys are really developing before the camera. Nicely done.

Also enjoyed Larry Becker’s blurb on the Wescott Apollo. I’ve been using Lumiquest Softbox III on my remote flashes, with good results. But the Wescott looks like a dramatically improved solution for studio shooting. Excellent.

  98. David Taylor says:

As usual, a great show. I shoot in aperture priority, but just recently have discovered how great it is to shoot in manual mode!!

  99. David Taylor says:

    Question:
Cliff Mautner talkes about shooting portraits with an 85 f/1.4. For portraits how does this lens compare to a 105 f/2.0 DC or the 135 f/2.0 DC lens.

Of note, for now I will be shooting on a D90 (therefore with an APS-C sized sensor).

    William

    Scott & Matt,

Love, love, love the show and watch every episode! As a relatively new DSLR user, I have seen the hard drive space on both my iMac and MBP quickly disappear! I was wondering is you guys could address some options, particularly with Lightroom catalogs. I have plenty of backup external drives as well as Time Machine. But what about offsite backup or online backup? Pros and cons? Thanks for always making learning fun!

    great work guys

  288. Jon says:

Like the show, I will say one thing that may help some of the viewer especially beginners as I teach photo workshops and that is Scott when you mentioned shooting in Aperture mode, it would have help if you also mentioned as a side bar that the shutter speed will vary as you change the f-stop. Which is important if you are shooting a moving subject.

One other thing Matt where did you or where can we get a t-shirt of the settings that you wore on the show… too cool.

    Thanks guys
