Thanks for another good show, guys! :)

I’m wondering about the lens hood. I noticed the Mamiya lens hood had a different shape than the first one. How important is it to have a lens hood that has the same shape as the one that’s made for the lens?

    Keep up the good work!

    Thx
    Tony

  2. Joe Heller says:

Great show guys! Lots of good stuff but a technical issue was distracting.

Love stereo audio but not when it is panned to the wrong side. Matt and Scott’s audio tracks were flipped/panned to the wrong sides in the studio.

Other than that keep them coming!

  3. can you post the ISO Settings of your D3, looks like ISO 3200????

  4. Tony says:

    Thanks for a good show!

I have a question regarding the lens hood. I noticed that the Mamiya lens hood had a different shape than the original one. Isn’t it important that the replacement lens hood has the same shape as the original?

    Keep up the good work

    /Tony

  5. Karl-Franz says:

Scott, I absolutely love my Mamiya rubber lens hood. After we saw you and Corey in Orlando for your tour last Fall, V, Terry Reinert, Jeff King and I went to Tampa to spend the weekend with RC, Brad and Matt K. We went on a photoshoot in a back alley in Ybor City and I noticed that Jeff K. was using one of these hoods. He said that he learned about it from Joe McNally who swears by them. When I got home I ordered one I found on Ebay for only $17 and it has been on my lens ever since.

I shoot for a racing team that has a celebrity driver. The paparazzi are always hanging around trying to get a shot of him. At one race in Miami Speedway last October they saw my new lens hood and asked me about it. Many had resorted to taping their hoods onto the lens barrel to keep it from popping off. The next race, all of them were now sporting the Mamiya hood as well. Good tips travel fast!

  6. Rick says:

Really interested in the Rick Sammon segment. I have 2 speedlites and pocketwizards w/ umbrellas. Maybe Rick could do a training session on Kelby Training with speedlights and all the possibilities.

    Thanks,
    Rick

  7. Deano says:

Do you use a lens hood inside I was told to let all the light in that you can when light is low?

  8. Isak says:

I’ve been watching dtown since first season and even tho i’ve been a photographer for quite some time i always find your episodes interesting!

I’m sure you guys know this which left me puzzled since i have no idea why you said otherwise in the video but if you have 1/400 at f/4 you have 1/800 at f/2.8 if both shots are exposed the same.

Anyways, great show! keep it up and don’t make another silly mistakes like that one ;) haha

    Best Regards
    Isak

  9. Marty says:

Hi Scott, I like the idea of the rubber lens shade. Back in 1970’s and 80’s I used a Mamiya C330 twin lens reflex for wedding photography and I had a rubber lens shade on it for the very same reason you mentioned. Good job with D-town.

    Thanks,

    Marty

  10. vgallo says:

Shooting from f/4 to f/2,8 is 1 full stop of light, you should get 1/800th, probably someone smiling in the crowd with big white teeth changed the exposure. Nikon matrix metering is awesome!!!

  11. Ross says:

    Awesome show!

What was your ISO for f4, 1/400 and f2.8, 1/1000 shots of indoor NBA game?

    Thanks,
    Ross

  12. Joseph says:

Good stuff as always! The red jackets were a great idea; they made it easy to see the black equipment being held where as the black tee shirts always tend to hide them.

  13. Snapshott says:

I’ve been using the Mamiya M77 #2 lens rubber lens shade for a couple of years now and simply love it.

Another plus to it is you can screw it into you circular polarizer and it spins with it.

Great show however I missed the Cheap Shots segment. Hope it’s back in the future.

  14. DennyCayman says:

  15. Michael Johnson says:

Best “new” show yet. Thanks .
Pocketwizard with multi. speedlites is a must.
Reflector segment was great, Matt. They make a big differance in the quality of your shots.

    Thanks, Mike

  16. Jim Larcom says:

This video cuts out at 12:32 for me. Anyone else?

  17. Mike says:

    Hi Guys,

Great episode, but what’s up with the audio channels being reversed after Scott’s ‘fast glass’ segment? Anyways I wondering if you guys would one day try to shoot an entire episode using a DSLR in video mode.

  18. TCragoJr. says:

I started watching this show last month and really enjoy it. I went back and watched plenty of the old episodes too. I do not have a complaint since the show is free, I don’t have a right to complain. But I do have a suggestion.

Try to find someone more relevant than Rick Sammon. The guy has been around forever with the same old sayings, same old slide shows, same old tips, same old jokes, etc. He hasn’t said anything new in 10 years.

It seems like he’s a nice guy but he’s made a living teaching photography. I’d rather learn from people like McNally who actually shot well enough to make a living as a photographer.

  19. Hend says:

    Great show guys.
i have a question about the lensbaby, what is it for exactly and how to use it, u mentioned it before in the last season but it was very quick and i didn’t understand what is it for exactly.

    Thanks

  20. Mark J says:

I agree with Rick above. Would really like to see the details on Mr. Sammons use of speedlights, wizards and reflectors, etc. for portratis as he shows. Kelby TV.com would be a great place for that, as I subcribe to those lessons. Many of us don’t want to invest in studio lights but would like to see how to use speedlights and reflectors, in a quick setting as Mr. Sammons shows.

  21. Daf says:

The lens hood that comes with the 17-55 has a little metal clip-switch thing – means it stays on a lot better. If you have any connections with Nikon – worth suggesting to them that they do this for all pro-lense hoods.

  22. Russ says:

What happened to the “cheap shots” segment? I love the show and really appreciate the efforts and time you put in to this.

  23. Andreas says:

Great show but I noticed that when Scott talks at 08:32 the audio only comes from my right speaker and he is standing on the left side of the picture?

    Keep up the good work!

  24. Dave Rogers says:

I recently read a long thread on this topic on the Linkedin Nikon discussion forum. One of the posters wrote that he worked as a lens designer for 25 years at a major manufacturer. During that time they had a staff that only designed lens hoods for all their lenses. He said that the petal shaped lens hoods are specifically designed to improve contrast and that not using one will cause a measurable reduction in contrast. So if you have bought good ($$$) glass then use the lens hood that was specifically designed for that lens even in doors.

  25. Great weekly programs BUT why can’t you add a feature on the program to enable all or any viewer to forward that or any of your shows onto other fellow photographers?
I have several photogs that I know that would LOVE to watch your weekly programs.
Many thanks and keep,up the fantastic work!!

  26. Check out the assorted sizes of RUBBER LENS HOODS on Ebay. I found one just like the Mamiya 77mm screwin for only $7 bucks

There are many sises available and most are under $15

  27. I really like using the pocket wizard with 2 800 speedlights. My question is that after watching this episode and episode 36 about the portable lighting, how are the two different? I know that one uses flashes while the other uses a strobe light, but are there specific situations when one is better than the other?

  28. Alan Bennett says:

Anyone know where I can purchase the Mamiya lens hood in the UK?
