Episode Summary
DTown TV is a weekly show brought to you by Scott Kelby and Matt Kloskowski with KelbyTraining.com.
Episode Summary
This week Scott and Matt cover:
- How to setup channels on your wireless SB800 and SB900 flashes
- Joe McNally's SB900 tip about using the flash zoom
- A demo of using flash groups with multiple flashes
Also, check out this helpful PDF, Fast Track to Wireless Speedlights, from Nikon.

[...] I videoen forklarer selveste Joe McNally, gudefotografen over dem alle, om kreativ flash fotografering og om hvordan man opsætter sin eksterne blitz for at opnå nogle særdeles flotte resultater. Du kan finde afsnit på dette link. [...]
Great show this week! To give it that little extra visual impact it would be nice to have a model to shoot and show images of the results, or some sort of static setup to use for every show so people can compare results from different shows.
Have to ask, have you had a camera or lens drop off that table yet? I sent a message after the first show that suggested you use a table with a back panel and a lip on the front to prevent a lens from rolling off.
What is your setup for taking those close-up shots of camera/flash displays? I’ve had a devil of a time getting good results.
Keep up the good work! I hope this will be a long running show. Any chance that you’ll add a second show for those out there with Canon’s? (I’m a Nikon guy but Canon makes some awesome gear too)
Sincerely,
Robert Jensen
Hello guys, great show this week. Awesome tips for using a flash so big thanks to you and mr. Mcnally. I love what you are doing! So helpfull!
Thanks
Radomir
When you placed the falsh behind the subject, will that fire since there is no direct line of contact between the commander flash and the falsh behind our subject. We need the wireless commander unit for that, right?
I have 1 comment …………….. dnikon cool. I have Qflash, but now I am seriously considering a couple of sb600.
Another great show thx guys
I really appreciate the detailed step-by-step. I found Joe’s video on the SB900 went by too fast from my perspective.. an absolute nOOb to the topics. This series is really filling in the holes. I’ll go back and watch the KelbyTraining vids again and I’m sure I’ll get more out of them this time. Thanks so much. These videos are really a fantastic resource.
A big thank you to your team. Getting some insight on using flashes is EXTREMELY helpful. It puts the use of flashes in perspective versus trying to figure it out through a manual. Thank you again guys.
Awesome show. I was wondering if we/I could get a tad more detail in the setup of Joe’s on this? I noticed at glance he had a red filter on the flash. Was he locked down to ISO 200? WB? etc.
THANKS!!! Again, i am loving this series.
Another great episode, a question, on the flash there are 3 groups and on the camera there are 2, how do one control group C, especially from the camera?
Thanks and Regards
Cliff
Hello Guy’s,
thanks again for this top_show ! fantastic video like all the other’s one’s…i’m Fan !

Hi Guys. Love the series. Always leaves me wanting more and anticipating next week. Would love a show dedicated to dynamic focus using D300, D700 D3 and D3x. Specifically, situations when to use 9 versus 21, 51 and 51 (3D Tracking). I love to shoot sports and nature (birds) and have a hard time figuring out which focus to use. Thanks. Keep up the great work. Best wishes.
Sarkis Etoian
I like the idea of being able to use a flash remotely for a backlight, but….I thought there had to be line of site for the CLS to work? Could you clarify this?
Thanks.
Great show guys! Hope it continues for many weeks and months to come. Hey, is Joe’s new book a good read for beginners?
Thanks
You guys make it look so easy. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and passion.
I have one problem. I have had no problem using the flash/camera in the wireless mode but after turning off the wireless and going back to wired or on camera I can’t get the flash to go into the TTLBL mode, only TTL. I am sure I am leaving out some small detail but I have tried resetting the factory defaults on flash and camera with no luck. Any ideas?
Hi LOOK FORWORD TO YOUR SHOWS JUST GOT JOE MCNALLY BOOK ON YOU RECOMENDATION
I’m finking of getting a sb900 for my D2H IS THERE ANY (Functions ) THAT WILL NOT WORK WITH IS CAMERA?
new to flash
Hi,
Great tips, but I’d still like to have some more sample images. I.e. when you describe the weddingshots of yours.
Thanks, Now I know finally what is a group or a channel. I will use the groups for sure.
Ton vd Pal
Nice job, guys! Good refresher on the basics of channels and groups, and the segment with Joe was really helpful. Keep it up!
Thanks for another great episode! Adding to Sarkis Etoian’s suggestion for future topics (“Would love a show dedicated to dynamic focus using D300, D700 D3 and D3x. Specifically, situations when to use 9 versus 21, 51 and 51 (3D Tracking). I love to shoot sports and nature (birds) and have a hard time figuring out which focus to use.”) — if you do that topic, please be sure to reference focus systems on older cameras such as my D200! Not all of us can afford the latest, and I really appreciate your including earlier-but-still-fairly-current models in the demos.
Best regards,
Susan
Another great show and cannot wait for the final show. I would like to see what you would recommend as a starter kit for home setup….no professional but for portrait, macro, etc. that would enable me to learn and get better with this style of photography.
Will the commander mode allow you to remote trigger a pocket wizzard or is it only to trigger SB6,8,9xx series flashes?
Enjoying the series!!!
Thanks,
Tim
Thanks you guys , you have helped me improve my skills in just a few short weeks. I look forward to your show every week. One question. In episode 5 when you placed the flash behind Scott as a back light. I wasn’t able to see it. Dosn’t the pop up on the D300 need to get the flash “signal” to that flash to trigger it. Don’t they have to be in-line , with out being blocked by yer subject ????
Thanks again…
Great tutorials, thank you!
Adding to Sarkis Etoian and Susan for future topics regarding dinamic focus as well as follow focus in dinamic and continuous just using the AF-ON button technique.
Best regards,
Steven
Thank you very much for your work. EVERYTHING is useful. Not one piece has had me wanting to skip to the next segment. Keep up the great work! All shows are great.
As always, very informative. Keep up the good work. I am getting hungry for more Capture NX2 tips, though. Good job!
i’m pretty sure there’s a special place in heaven for you both! thanks so much again. i’m new to the whole lighting that’s not natural light thing, and this is a huge help.
i’m pretty sure there’s a special place in heaven reserved for you both. thanks so much. i’m new to this whole lighting that is not natural light thing, and this is so helpful!
Hi! i´m using a canon DSLR, but i still find this show real helpful!
Thanks for a great show.
//Rikard, Sweden.
REALY great Job- GUYS!
I can’t wait for the weekend- you HAVE TO make more episodes!
Oh soooooo helpful. Thank you.
For Matt. When bracketing for HD, wouldn’t a cable release be advisable?
Picking up on Sarkis’ request, please explain and demonstrate Dynamic focusing.
Production suggestions:
• An on-screen sidebar with subject titles that I can click and go to that portion of the program when I come back to that episode.
• After demonstrating a function or tip, refer to the appropriate user manual page number or numbers.
• Use more of the illustrative technique or style, rather than zooming (hand held) in on the subject, which is also hand held.
I hope you’re able to continue this very helpful initiative.
Take care, David Johns
You guys are doing great. Would not Mind if the show started to get a little longer so you could talk about more things at once. Some advice on Sports Shooting would be Awsome. F-stop, Shutter speed, ISO, & gear suggestions. Maybe even some special guest like what you are doing with Joe…This could end up being the best SLR training on the Web… I could only imagine how much info could be packed into an Episode the length of a PS-userTV show.
Oh yeah Moose Peterson on Shooting Airshows.
Interesting stuff.
Can I do Groups and Channels with a SB-80DX flashlight?
Thank you.
I would really love to see the set up on the su-800 unit and how that controls mutiple groups.
Hey guys, as always great show! But can you explain what the difference between TTL, M and the other options are for the remote flashes.
Hi, Can’t you split your show between hardware and software. NX2 is so helpfull for Nikon camaras. I know that you are the NAPP guys, but on this site digging NX2 is a must.
This is for Nikon’staff: can’t you afford a better studio decoration, Scott and Matt are looking like two poor salesmen in a department store!

I think you’ve hit a HOME RUN with this series!!! I’ve learned something new in every episode and I’ve been a Nikon shooter for a long time. I really like the WB adjustment tip to use live view and the command dial to adjust the color balance on the camera’s monitor. If I had known that simple trick sooner, I could have saved the money I’ve spent on WhiBal, Expodisc, Balens white balance lens cap, Lastolite reflector and about 10 grey cards! (Naw, I would have bought them anyway… it’s a sickness).
Only one suggestion: longer episodes, more tips (I guess that’s two).
BTW, I recently subscribed to Kelby Training. Very professionally done, clear instructions, and a great learning experience.
Thanks again.

Great show guys !
Thanks for fixing the glitch that prevented my computer from playing the shows all the way through. I finally got to watch episodes 3 & 4 as well as this one.
I have been using the SB-600, SB-800, SU-800, and pop-up commander for years and find this series a great refresher with many nuggets of inspiration along the way.
Now you’ve got me wanting at least one SB-900 for even more versatility.
Keep up the good work. Judging by the requests in the comments you will not run out of content ideas for a very long time.
Great show Scott & Matt! A must watch every week! Joe Mcnally is fantastic as well! His new book Hot Shoe Diaries is a must for any photographer! One of my favs after getting it last week!

hey guys. i just found this yesterday, although i actually follow scott’s stuff (site and books). i really think this is great. the tips are very helpful. the only problem is, they are too short and the intervals are too long. can’t you do a show a day, each lasting 24hours? with breaks of course
really appreciate the effort your putting into this, and the generousity to the photography community!
sincerely,
dan (from switzerland)
Hi guy,
I’m looking into getting a light meter, but I’m unsure what to look for. Can you guys help.
Scott and Matt:
Great and informative site, although the videos stream terribly slow regardless of quality. It’s at times unwatchable. You guys should change the flash player.
Hello guys. I really enjoy your show. Thanks for new tricks!
Greetings from Poland
After reading a number of comments regarding which piece of equipment does what and which gear can’t do certain things and all the minute details of every nuance of the Nikon system… I think you guys should do one of those really fast talking disclaimer runs at the beginning of each episode so there is no confusion about what does what.
At least you are listing all of the compatible cameras at the bottom of the screen now… that should help. Keep up the great work!
Guys, great series I’ve been asking for this for some time now. I know that you refer back to other or older Nikons but please don’t forget us with the D200 that haven’t updated yet.
Again, great show and keep up the good work!
Sincerely,
John Content
Scott and Matt, you spread knowledge like nobody else through internet collaborating with Nikon and other companies and I salute you for that. Some equipment you use is fairly expensive though. Please show us how to simulate a softbox or even an octabank using 2-3 sb-900 and some light modifiers.
Great show. Just long enough to get a few tips without killing an hour (LOL). I second the request for some tips for fast action shooting, like car racing….Thanks
Scott and Matt:
This is a great concept and I have been recommending it on my Blog as well as subscribing to the RSS Feeds.
HOWEVER, for some reason, this episode won’t play properly for me. It keeps freezing and starting again. Every other episode (including 6) works just fine. Is it me?
Thanks for this great service!

It’s a pretty small studio, so the controlling signal will bounce around a lot and reach the flash behind the subject.
@Steve Back – If I had to guess for the WB he probably set to flash wb and the gel you see is probably a CTO, the ISO only does any good (besides reducing noise) if we know all of the other settings that would affect the exposure for the photo (Av, and Flash Setting) Tv is most likely at synch speed cap. I hope that helped.
Hi Steve,
Henrique was correct about the gel, it is a CTO gel, which will warm up the light to mimic sunlight. I can’t speak to what Joe’s ISO and WB were for sure, but he generally is at the lowest possible ISO for whatever situation he is in (which would be 200 in this case), and his WB was most likely either auto or cloudy.

Cliff… the camera’s flash can only do Groups A and B… The SB-800, 900 and SU-800 can do A, B and C. You could assign a third flash to either A or B and just use it on Manual power to adjust it differently than the other flash in the same group. That way it still can be triggered at a different power setting… just not completely automatic as if it were assigned to Group C. Just a possible work around…
Sherry, line of sight is more important in bright light and sunny conditions. Inside the pre-flash bounces around the subject so line of sight isn’t as crucial. Just make sure the remote sensor is pointing toward the master flash for the best results.
Is the flash on the camera with a lens attached when setting it back to TTLBL?
Thank you somuch for clarify that…
Yes, Flash in hot shoe. 24-70 Nikkor lens attached
I got it two days ago and am loving it! It is very accessible for beginners, lots of explanations in easy to understand language. Actually, it seems to be aimed more towards that end of the market, from what I’ve read so far.
Hope that helps.
Alex,
Joe’s new book is for all levels, from beginning to advanced. He starts off with the basics, then works his way up to more complicated setups. But he dedicates a sizable portion of the book to one-light setups.

Is your camera set to spot metering by any chance?
David,
Yes, a cable release is definitely advisable.

Hi Sarkis,
Going over all of the autofocus modes is one of the most requested things we’ve gotten since the start of the show, and it is on the list of things we’re going to cover. Be on the lookout for this in a future episode!
Brad Moore

Hi Tim,
The commander mode will only trigger Nikon flashes set up in remote mode. Pocket Wizards will allow you to trigger any flash, but does not give you the same amount of control that commander mode will give you from the camera (you have to adjust the output on the flash itself).
For a starter kit, I think I would recommend two SB-600 units, so you can use one as a main light and one as a secondary light, then you can use your on-camera pop-up flash as the commander. Once you feel comfortable with this setup and want to upgrade to more advanced lights, you might add another SB-600 or get an SB-900 or two.

Hi Robert,
As Scott Diussa mentioned on an earlier comment, when you’re inside, and especially in a room with all white walls such as our photo studio, the signal from the on-camera flash will bounce around and reach the remote flash easily enough, even with someone standing in front of it. Think of it like a TV remote… It works best when you’re aiming straight at the TV, but you can also point it at the wall right behind you and it will usually bounce off and hit the TV if something is in your way. But if you’re outside in the bright sun with nothing for the signal to bounce off of, then you might run into a problem and have to move the flash a bit.

Be on the lookout for coverage on auto-focus modes in a future episode!

Hi Zach,
It’s really very much the same as the master modes on the SB-800 and SB-900, just without having its own flash.

I second the thought on Moose and airshows!
Thanks! Great portfolio by the way. I was just looking through it.

Thanks Matt! Photography is my side hobby…I actually work for “N” in the glass division. We produce the raw glass used in the lenses. Email me and I will give you our website address…you might find it interesting how glass is mfg’d…and how many optical glass choices there actually are!
I travel tons..thats where my photos come from. One day I will take portraits…that is the goal when I retire! So your show is wonderful…teaching me some great tips! I eagerly await each new episode! Have fun!
Looks like I’ve added another book to my collection! Thanks guys! The learning will never stop, and that’s a good thing! (hey, that’s three exclamation points…)
It will also be more effective using the SU-800 Commander instead of the built in flash.
The SU-800 Commander pulses are much more stronger ( will control futher away) than the built in flash pulses.
Scott,
That was the problem. Thanks so much. As I suspected it was operator error.
@ Fukoejese: What kind of junk was that? Please don’t clog up the comments section.
